Oscars!

Although I understand that many of you don't care, it is still 'the' award that everyone wants and I would be re-miss if I didn't post on it.

I will update as the day goes on.

Oh and I have highlighted the 'important ones'.

Film news and tidbits!

Ridley Scotts Prometheus... Is it an Alien prequel, isn’t it?  Who knows but apparently it does feature the alien in some form.  According to this article at bleeding cool ( http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/02/24/prometheus-rumours-unbound-how-the-alien-aliens-factor-in/ ) the film will feature the Alien creature (Xenomorph).  So I guess slowly this is becoming a little clearer as to what it is.  The film isn’t a proper prequel but it is set in the same univers prior to the events in Alien????? I think.  Ultimately who cares Ridley Scott + sci fi = my ass on a seat!
Oh and there is a new red band trailer for Paul out.  Strangely it isn’t as funny as the previous trailers but still much to look forward to.

Obsequiousmelon learned the way of the Warrior.

Name of the Film:  The Warriors
Starring:  Michael Beck, James Remar and Dorsey Wright

The Warriors are a street gang from Coney Island.  They are summoned along with all the other gangs to a meeting held by enigmatic leader Cyrus.  Cyrus has a plan to unite the gangs and take over New York but when the police arrive and Cyrus is shot, the Warriors are blamed and find themselves trying to get home with every cop and gang member searching for them.
There are many films that have the label cult favourite but this one truly earns its title.  Famous for allegedly insighting gang violence at its screenings it has had a troubled past with distribution problems and a reputation for being more violent than it really is.
But is it any good?

Games I want to play now - Dead Island

I don't intend to start covering games news much but this trailer for Dead Island demands that I share.

Be warned it is harsh, brutal, sad and 52 flavours of awesome!  I said in my Inception review that anything involving a dad and his children affects me more since the birth of my own.

I love it, so should you!

FIlms I have to see now - Your Highness

Films that are awesome often don't have good trailers and awesome trailers don't always mean great films.  But dear god please let this be as wicked as the trailer is!

I warn you this is the Restricted trailer so there is swearing and a gratuitous arse shot of Natalie Portman!

Ladies and gentlemen i present to you...

Your Highness.

Of Spidermen and reboots!

Name of the Film:  The Spiderman Trilogy
Starring: Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst.

It’s reboot time in Hollywood and Spiderman is the latest victim.  Too soon?  Maybe, but Spiderman 3 was awful, right?
Well I thought it was time to take a look back at the films as a trilogy.  See if the first two elevate the third or if the third drags down the first two?
And the answer is...

How Easy is Obsequiousmelon?

Name of the Film:  Easy A
Starring: Emma Stone

Teen comedies are often mislabeled in that they aren’t funny.  Too often a guy drinking cum in a beer is mistaken for hilarity.
Don’t get me wrong American Pie is very funny but eventually the joke wears thin and when it does it seems to be all the writers had in their arsenal, which means we end up with (often) vomit inducing over sentimentality backed by a crappy but ‘oh so trying to be indie to appeal to those youngsters’ soundtrack.

Super bowl spots.

So by now I guess most of you will have seen the super bowl tv spots for the coolest films arriving later this year.  Sorry I'm a little late with this but I've had a mega busy week even though I'm technically on holiday.  Instead of putting up every embed of every trailer i have deiced to put up my favourite of the trailers.

Was Obsequiousmelon buzzed by the Green Hornet?

Name of the Film:  The Green Hornet
Date seen:  4th February
I guess you either love Seth Rogen or you don’t.  I read a lot of fanboy hate about him.  I don’t understand why, I think he is funny.  I like most of the films he is in.

So couple that I like Seth Rogen, with the fact that I have seen a few of the old Green Hornet shows starring Bruce Lee meant that I was really looking forward to the Green Hornet.
However in a year that is going to feature Thor, Captain America and The Green Lantern how does the superhero that started life as a radio play stand up?

Obsequiousmelon has True Grit.

Name of the Film:  True Grit
Date seen:  2nd February

Why?  Some of my friends asked.  Why do we need more remakes?
Well there are a couple of answers to that.  Firstly it is the Coens making the film.  They are truly awe inspiring at times (except maybe a couple of them, Intolerable Cruelty and The Ladykillers I’m looking at you!)  Fargo is probably my favourite film of all time.  Secondly because it isn’t a proper remake.  The Coens went back to the original book by Charles Portis and adapted it.
Finally from my point of view I hate John Wayne.  He was a great cinema legend but he was of his time and I don’t enjoy his movies.  So with all this in mind I have been eagerly awaiting the Coens take on such a famous story.
From the opening shot that so wonderfully speaks of the isolation and solitary nature of a mans fate in the old west, to its quiet but thoughtful ending this is a majestic film.  Better than the John Wayne version in every way.

Obsequiousmelon leveled up with Scott Pilgrim

Name of the Film:  Scott Pilgrim Versus the World
Date seen:  23rd January
Format:  DVD
Scott Pilgrim never came out at the cinema in Hong Kong and now you can buy it on import dvd so I guess it never will.  Which is a shame because the strength of the gamer culture over here means that I think it would have done well.  Plus Knives Chau is all kinds of awesome and a chinese audience would have responded to that.
Scott Pilgrim (played by Michael Cera) is an unemployed twenty year old slacker who is a bassist for a band... And he’s dating a high schooler!  That is until he meets Ramona Flowers, the new intriguing girl in town.  Everything seems fine with his new girl until he is confronted by the League of seven evil Ex’s!
