Films I have to see now - Don't be Afraid of the Dark

Now this film I am very excited about.  I love classic horror films and it doesn't get more classic than a haunted house 'esque' story.  Guy Pierce plays the dad, Katie Holmes  is his girlfriend and Bailee Madison is the daughter.  I have to say that the trailer filled me with a growing sense of dread but that the final jump scare was a bit off and risked ruining the whole effect but I'm still totally excited by this.

Oh I nearly forgot... Alan Dale is the man!  A true 27% (the 27%ers) and here he gets to play the all knowing next door neighbor, perfect!  (At least I hope it will be!)

The trailer for the Guillermo Del Toro presented, Troy Nixey directed film, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark.

Films I have to see now - Shark Night 3D

Ok so I'm  guessing your eyes rolled as much as mine did.  But there are enough good shark films out there to make me believe that this could be one more.  Let me be honest I'm not expecting Jaws.  Frankly I will be disappointed if it even tries to be that good.  Piranha 3D succeeded because it knew what it was and that's what I'm hoping for from this!

Obsequiousmelon enjoyed Fast Five

Name of the Film: Fast Five
Starring:  Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Dwayne Johnson and pretty much anyone that has ever been in any of the previous Fast and Furious films.

Having bust Dom out of jail at the end of the fourth film the gang are on the run in Rio and running out of money.  When what seems to be an easy job goes badly wrong, the gang find themselves up against the local drug lord, the local police and a crusading marshal from America.
The Fast and the Furious franchise was all about car porn traditionally and although I love cars I need more from my films to maintain my interest and as the sequels started to increase in number I switched off by number three.

Film news and tidbits!

I really wanted to stay clear of any The Dark Knight Rises news.  I am such a Nolan fan boy that I have complete faith in him when it comes to my favourite super hero.  I wanted to walk into the cinema knowing nothing but I have completely failed in that respect already so what the hell.

I have already reported that Tom Hardy has been cast as Bane and that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle (who may or not be Catwoman in this film, her character has only been announced as her alter ego so far!)

Well now we have this official picture of Bane... (God he's huge! How'd he pull that off?!?!?!)

Films I have to see now - Green With Envy

Jason Segel and Amy Adams, two of my favourite actors in a romantic comedy.  Just perfection ;-) lol.  Fantastic trailer check it out, we can chat afterwards, I don't want to ruin this for anyone...

Films I have to see now - Green Lantern new trailer

It's trailer day here on Films to date my sister by and I think I may have just found my favourite.  Green Lantern is looking better and better.  I'm genuinely excited to see this now.  See what you think...

I think it looks cool.

Films I have to see now - Transformers trailer 3

Transformers... I guess after that one word you are either on board or not!  Still there is a new trailer and it is very cool.  Everything seems epic and dark.

Film news and tidbits!

Stephen Fry Joins The Hobbit

Stephen Fry is going to be in the Hobbit - AWESOME!  I love that man... Apparently he is going to play the Master of Laketown.  Was excited before and now I am still excited.  Stephen Fry makes everything he is in 37% better... Fact!

Ian McKellen Finds The Buxom Strumpet

There is a film in production called The Curse of the Buxom Strumpet.  To me the title alone is enough for me to be first in line when it is released.  It is based on a comedy short called E'gad Zombies which also sounds brilliant.  Apparently Sir Ian McKellen is also on board and has filmed his scenes already.  Fantastic!

Obsequiousmelon loves The Shiznit.co.uk

The Shiznit is a film website in the UK (click the name to be whisked there now) and a lot of their stuff is very funny.  My favourite post at the moment are what the summer blockbuster posters would say if the studios told the truth.  These are my favourites but click the link to see some more.

Films I want to see now - Tin Tin

I always enjoyed Tin Tin.  They were some of the earliest books I read as a child and the saturday morning cartoons that seemed to go nowhere (story wise) each episode, were cool.

Any film that is the result of Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg collaborating immediately has my interest so everything seems cool.

Follow the link to watch the trailer in glorious quicktime.

Films I want to see now - Fright Night

I like the original but I don't love it.  If I'm honest I think it looks a bit cheap and it is all a bit tongue in cheek, which is fine but I think that it is ok that it is being remade and this trailer looks like it could be fairly awesome!

I present for you, Fright Night

Obsequiousmelon found The Lost Bladesman.

Name of the Film: The Lost Bladesman
Starring:  Donnie Yen,  Wen Jiang
Having just started reading Romance of the Three Kingdoms and wanting to learn more about the four great classical novels of Chinese literature (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Great_Classical_Novels), I was excited to see this take on the very famous story of the legendary general Guan Yu.

I was expecting epic passions, complex characters having their motives questioned and their ambitions change, legendary fight scenes coupled with beautiful cinematography and set design.
And what did I get?

Films I want to see now - Horrible Bosses

Horrible Bosses is a comedy starring Jason Bateman, Charlie Day (Charlie from It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia... if you haven't seen this awesome show you should just to see Danny Devito scream 'Holy Shitballs!') Jason Sudeikis from Saturday Night Live and outlandish performances as the titular bosses from Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell (anyone else get a tom cruise in Tropic Thunder vibe, I love the large Marge comment, delightfully cruel), Kevin Spacey and Jaimie Foxx as a 'murder consultant'...

I don't need to say anything else right?  Your butt is already in the seat right?  If it isn't then you need to watch this trailer.  It's good in that it is amusing without (hopefully) showing the funniest moments.

The people involved are enough to make me want to see this now!

Films I want to see now - Real Steal

When I first heard about this I groaned, I'm still unsure but this trailer looks promising if cliched.
I present to you...

Real Steal.

Obsequiousmelon got Punished

Name of the Film: Punished
Starring:  Anthony Wong, Richie Ren, Janice Man
Anthony Wong Chau Sang
(This review contains spoilers!)
When a rich land owners daughter is found dead after a kidnapping, he sends his bodyguard out to get revenge, but will the cost of vengeance be too high?
I’m a big fan of Anthony Wong and so when I heard he had a new film coming out I was excited.  Then I read that it was a revenge thriller.  I love revenge films.  Raw emotion, bad ass action and just brutal cool are hall marks of the genre and I was very interested to see what Director Wing Cheong Law would do with the idea.
What results is a good film but definitely not a great one.

Cool posters for iffy films 2

Remember the poster I showed you for Conan The Barbarian?  Well now they have released another, less cool but still awesome, poster.
The buggers wont let me embed it though so here is a link until I stop being thick and work out how to do it!

Films I want to see now - X - Men: First Class Character intros!

I've always loved X-Men even though my comic buying history is some what faddy.  I would always buy Batman comics but apart from that I would go through phases, it's true I was a comic whore, totally unfaithful.  Although 2000 AD (Judge Dredd), Spawn, The Hulk and The X-Men were the comics I was most faithful to after Batman.

I also really like Matthew Vaughn's films.  Kick Ass kicked ass and I am totally convinced that this will be awesome too.
So to whet your appetite even more Mtv have gotten hold of some little character spots that I thought you might like.  Beast is my favourite of the three, mainly 'cause he is one of my favourite characters, him and Colossus (shame he isn't in this one as they aren't sticking to the comic timeline anyway).  Awesome, both of them!

Films I have to see now - Conan

Remember I shared with you a cool poster for an iffy film?  Well now, said iffy film has a full trailer.  Behold Conan in all his rebooted glory.  Still not sold on this but my interest is at least a little piqued.  I have to say that it looks good but when the music kicks in half way through I get a faint vibe of an HBO original series advert which can be a good thing or a bad thing.  Still as ever I will give it the benefit of the doubt until I see it.

For your viewing pleasure, Conan.

Films I have to see now - Green Lantern

I'm getting very excited for this film.  Each thing I see makes me more interested. They have really done a good job of gradually building interest.  Some new stuff in this latest trailer, on the whole this looks pretty cool.

Enjoy.

Star Wars Blu Rays announced.

I think, as a film geek, there is no title in film that evokes both nostalgia and sadness.  I was born in 1980 and as I grew up the original Star Wars trilogy was one of the groups of films, in England, that was always shown at Christmas time along with things like The Great Escape, Mary Poppins, It's a Wonderful Life and Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang.

Obsequiousmelon wants to be worthy of the power of Thor!

Name of the Film: Thor
Starring:  Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman
When he defies his father’s decree and risks war with the frost giants, the powerful but arrogant young warrior, Thor, is cast out from his alien home of Asgard by his father Odin.  Finding himself on Earth, weakened and alone, he sets out to reclaim his hammer and his birthright.
Marvel have taken steady steps in creating their filmic universe.  I think it is important to separate the films made using Marvel’s characters and the films made by Marvel studios.  Spiderman and the X-Men movies were made by Sony and Fox respectively.  Where as Iron Man, Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk and now Thor were made by Marvel studios.  Now why is that important I hear you cry, well it is important because there is a continuity running through those films that is solely Marvel’s doing.  Those are the films where you get an end of credits scene linking into the next production.  Those are the films that look (from a production point of view at least) as though they exist in the same world.
Out of the films that Marvel has made so far I personally don’t think they have put a foot wrong (even though I know that there are many gripes about both Iron Man 2 and The Incredible Hulk out there on the internet).  I have found reasons to enjoy all their films so far.
