I think, as a film geek, there is no title in film that evokes both nostalgia and sadness. I was born in 1980 and as I grew up the original Star Wars trilogy was one of the groups of films, in England, that was always shown at Christmas time along with things like The Great Escape, Mary Poppins, It's a Wonderful Life and Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang.
Thats what Star Wars was for me. Christmas is my favourite time of the year, films are my favourite, erm... past time???? And the two have bonded in my mind. I love the original Star Wars trilogy and I remember the excitement when the new films were announced... and then I saw them, oh.
And what's worse the new trilogy just highlighted the faults with the original films that didn't seem to matter before.
So now something to do with Star Wars is announced and my reaction is, "Meh!" And that makes me sad because I remember when Star Wars was such a source of joy for me.
