Name of the Film: Predators
Starring: Adrien Brody, Lawrence Fishburne, Topher Grace, Alice Braga.
I first saw Predators at the cinema when it first came out. Unfortunately I had been awake for a few days and was exhausted. The dark cinema and the comfortable chairs meant that I fell asleep for about ten minutes. So my opinion was not good but I was painfully aware that any view I had on the film was invalid because I probably missed something totally ninja right?
Well I like Robert Rodriguez films and I like both original Predator films (yes I accept that 2 isn’t in the same class as the first one but still I enjoy it) so I want Predators to be 54 flavours of awesome.
So I sat down to watch the dvd both nervous and excited.
I was wrong, very wrong. Predators has it’s faults but on the whole it is a fun way to spend a couple of hours.
Predators is directed by Nimrod Antal and is produced by Robert Rodriguez who apparently acted as some kind of mentor.
Adrian Brody, Topher Grace and Alice Braga are dropped into the jungle and then are hunted by an unseen force. They soon find out that they are on an alien planet and that aliens might not be the worst of their problems!
Wisely the script doesn’t waste time with too much exposition instead we are dumped into the jungle with Adrian Brody and the tension kicks of immediately as the various people try to figure each other out whilst under constant pressure from the predators hunting them.
In the early parts of the film we have interesting and believable interactions between the characters as they start to piece together what has happened.
Where the film starts to fall down is in Lawrence Fishburne’s cameo. The idea of his character ripples with possibilities but sadly they drop the ball through a combination of poor scripting, including some ridiculous choices of the sort a bond villain might make, and some slightly over the top acting.
Still after this brief, minor blip we get back into the jungle and trying to escape and everything gets back on track.
You can see the character twist towards the end, coming a mile off, but it doesn’t really matter as by that point you are either sold on the film or not.
Certainly as good as Predator 2 if not a little better but certainly an entire echelon above the dire Alien vs Predator films that were, let’s be honest, a steaming pile of shit!
I enjoyed it but it wasn’t life changing. Fun, mindless but still entertaining, I could think of worse ways to spend two hours.
Did I enjoy the film? Yes
Would I recommend it to my friends? Yes I would as a fun film.
Will I buy it on DVD/Blu Ray? Yes.
If it was a mate would I let it date my Sister? Hmmm that is a difficult one... No probably not if I’m honest.
